Started out just after daybreak, beautiful weather. Took a couple of hours to get out of Miami – absolutely love my new Garmin 1030! Once we hit Tamiami trail the ride was smoother. Traffic not bad at all, most drivers courteous and giving us plenty space.

Riding along Loop Rd was a treat; the abundance of alligators lying along the road was absolutely amazing. Fascinating seing those beautiful creatures who have been around for 37 million years coexisting with modern life. We were happy to see that they are a federally protected species. Along the gators there were a plethora of herons and turtles. Actually, I’m not entirely shure they were turtles since turtles live in salt water and terrapins in fresh water and since this water is bracket – maybe turtlepins?

Now a day of rest in Everglades city before heading out on leg 2.
